For the past month this tiny book called A Technique For Producing Ideas by James Webb Young has been recommended to me a few different times. I decided it was time to read it—and I did—in one sitting. Super practical, y’all.
"The first of these steps is for the mind to gather its raw material. That, I am sure, will strike you as a simple and obvious truth…Gathering raw material in a real way is not as simple as it sounds. It is such a terrible chore that we are constantly trying to dodge it…Instead of working systematically at the job of gathering raw material we sit around hoping for inspiration to strike us. When we do that we are trying to get the mind to take the fourth step in the idea-producing process while we dodge the preceding steps."
